EV Charging in Alabama

Alabama is experiencing substantial growth in its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, driven by significant federal and state funding, strategic planning, and private sector investment. The state has been allocated an estimated $79 million from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program, with over $11 million already awarded for 14 projects, predominantly for fast-charging stations along major travel corridors. These projects aim to place chargers no farther than a mile from an interstate and ensure 24/7 operation.

Key growth trends show a concerted effort to build out a robust network. Since 2020, the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) has awarded 44 grants for charging stations, with 30 currently operational. As of October 2025, Alabama had 538 public EV charging stations, including over 240 DC Fast chargers, marking an 81% surge in DCFC deployment over the past year. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is also contributing through its Fast Charge Network, targeting chargers every 50 miles along interstates and major highways.

The strategic plan prioritizes major interstates such as I-65, I-565, I-59, I-459, I-20, I-85, I-10, and I-22, with the goal of having fast chargers spaced no more than 50 miles apart. Cities like Atmore, Clanton, Cottondale, Eutaw, Evergreen, Falkville, Fort Deposit, Gadsden, Hamilton, Heflin, Irvington, Jasper, and Montgomery are receiving NEVI chargers to serve these critical travel corridors, ensuring EV drivers have convenient access across the state.
