Arizona is actively expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, driven by a multi-phase plan and substantial federal funding through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is leading this initiative, aiming to establish a comprehensive network of rapid-charging stations across the state's major travel corridors. This expansion is designed to reduce range anxiety and accelerate EV adoption by ensuring convenient access to charging facilities.
The growth trend involves phased deployment, with an initial 18 charging stations along Interstates 10, 8, 40, 17, and 19 expected to be operational by 2026. A second phase is already in motion, seeking bids for 34 additional stations on these interstates and US Routes 60, 89, 93, 160, and State Routes 64, 68, 80, 87, 90, 95, 260, and 347, with construction anticipated to start in 2027. Future plans also suggest further expansion to include highways like SR 77, SR 69, SR 89A/89, SR 179, SR 260, SR 85, and SR 287.
These new stations will typically be located no more than 50 miles apart and within one mile of a highway, each featuring at least four 150-kilowatt direct current (DC) fast chargers capable of charging a typical EV in 30 minutes or less. From 2025 onwards, all new stations will be required to offer both the SAE North American Charging Standard (NACS/Tesla) and the Combined Charging System (CCS) plugs. All new charging infrastructure will be privately owned and operated, fostering a robust, publicly accessible, and reliable fast-charging network across Arizona.

There are currently 1,000 EV charging stations in Arizona, including Tesla Superchargers, ChargePoint, Electrify America, and other networks. This number is growing as new stations are deployed through the NEVI federal program and private investment.
Arizona has Level 2 chargers (240V, ideal for daily charging at 12-80 miles/hour) and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) that can add 100+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes. Connector types include CCS, CHAdeMO, J1772, and Tesla NACS. Use Charge Map USA's filters to find the right charger for your vehicle.
Some Level 2 charging stations in Arizona offer free charging, particularly at shopping centers, hotels, and municipal locations. Use Charge Map USA to browse stations across 105 cities in Arizona and check individual station details for pricing information.
