EV Charging in Connecticut

Connecticut is actively expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, driven by federal funding and state initiatives. As of October 2025, the state boasts 4,455 publicly available EV charging ports, including 740 DC fast charging ports, demonstrating a significant increase in capacity. From 2021 to 2023 alone, direct current fast-charging (DCFC) ports saw a 34 percent rise, and Level 2 charging ports nearly doubled with a 96 percent increase, highlighting a strong growth trend in charging availability across the state.

A key focus of this expansion is along major transportation arteries, designated as \"Alternative Fuel Corridors.\" These include Interstates 91, 95, 84, and 395, as well as State Route 7. The state has received $52.5 million from the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program to specifically bolster its high-speed charging network on these critical highways. Connecticut's Department of Transportation is further investing $5.4 million to add dozens of new DC fast charging ports, with each site featuring a minimum of four fast-charging ports located within one mile of highway exit ramps in various towns like Hartford, Waterbury, and Meriden.

Beyond new installations, there's a concerted effort to equip service plazas with universal Level 3 fast chargers. By 2024, the number of universal chargers in these plazas more than tripled, becoming available in 16 of the 23 locations, with a target to outfit all plazas by the end of 2025. Private sector involvement, with companies like Electrify America and EVgo, further contributes to the high-speed charging options along I-91 and I-95. Despite some delays in the federal program rollout, Connecticut is steadily progressing towards a robust and accessible fast-charging network across its key transportation corridors.
