Delaware is proactively expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, driven by state initiatives and significant federal funding. The state's "Charging Forward" plan, a collaborative effort by DelDOT and DNREC, aims to build a robust EV charging network across the state. As of July 2024, Delaware had over 600 commercial and rapid charging stations, but projections highlight a need for over 12,500 more ports by 2032 to meet the anticipated growth in EV adoption, with nearly 60,000 EVs expected by 2027 and 205,000 by 2032.
Key highways targeted for new charging station installations include I-95, Route 1, Route 13, and Route 113. Federal funding, including $17.5 million from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program, alongside state and Volkswagen mitigation settlement funds, is being allocated for these developments. DelDOT has accepted bids for projects to install charging stations at least every 50 miles along these major corridors, with contracts currently being finalized. Additionally, a $14.3 million federal grant has been secured for medium- and heavy-duty EV charging stations specifically along I-95.
Delaware's strategic planning and investment have positioned it as a national leader in EV infrastructure readiness. The state is also implementing incentives such as rebates for Level 2 EV charging stations for various property types and mandates EV infrastructure in new construction. The overarching goal is to enhance EV accessibility, reduce carbon emissions, and foster a cleaner, more sustainable transportation system.
