J1772 Connector

The standard Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging connector used by most EVs in North America.

The SAE J1772 connector (also called a J-plug) has been the standard AC charging connector for electric vehicles in North America since 2009. It supports both Level 1 (120V) and Level 2 (240V) charging, with a maximum power delivery of approximately 19.2 kW at 80 amps.

The connector features five pins: two AC power lines, a ground, a proximity detection pin (tells the vehicle a cable is connected), and a control pilot pin (manages communication between the charger and vehicle). Its ergonomic design includes a locking mechanism to prevent accidental disconnection during charging.

Virtually all non-Tesla EVs sold in North America from 2010-2024 use J1772 for AC charging. Tesla vehicles use the proprietary NACS connector but include a J1772 adapter with every vehicle. Starting in 2025, many automakers are transitioning to NACS for new models, though J1772 infrastructure will remain relevant for years given the millions of existing ports. J1772 is the connector you'll find at most public Level 2 stations, workplace chargers, and home charging setups.
