NEVI Program

The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure formula program funding EV chargers nationwide.

The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program was established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021, allocating $5 billion over five years (2022-2026) to build a national EV charging network. Each state receives formula-based funding to deploy DC fast chargers along designated Alternative Fuel Corridors, primarily Interstate highways.

NEVI requires stations to have at least four CCS (Combined Charging System) ports capable of simultaneously delivering 150 kW each, with a total station power of 600 kW minimum. Stations must be located within one mile of an Interstate exit and spaced no more than 50 miles apart. These requirements ensure reliable coast-to-coast EV travel.

As of early 2025, most states have approved plans and begun deploying NEVI-funded stations. The program has catalyzed private investment, with companies like ChargePoint, Electrify America, and Tesla (via NACS adapters) participating as site hosts. NEVI is the largest federal investment in EV charging infrastructure in US history and is expected to fund over 500,000 new chargers by 2030.
