Iowa is actively expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, supported by substantial federal funding and state-led initiatives. The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is spearheading efforts to strategically deploy chargers along major transportation arteries to accommodate the increasing number of EVs, which have tripled in registration since 2020. This expansion is crucial for supporting the growing EV adoption across the state.
A significant driver of this growth is the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, through which Iowa will receive over $51 million in federal funds. These funds are specifically allocated for developing EV charging along key highway corridors, including Interstates I-29, I-35, I-80, and I-380. The Iowa DOT has already committed over $16.2 million, supplemented by private investment, to install 28 new direct-current fast-charging (DCFC) stations. These stations are mandated to meet NEVI standards, ensuring public accessibility, proximity to interstates (within one mile), spacing (no more than 50 miles apart), and sufficient power output with at least four 150 kW charging ports.
The state has seen a marked increase in charging options, with DCFC ports growing by 96% and Level 2 ports by 35% between 2021 and 2023. As of mid-2023, Iowa boasted 371 public charging stations with 857 ports, a notable rise from earlier in the year. This targeted deployment focuses on underserved areas near the interstate system, aiming to provide convenient, accessible, and reliable charging options for EV owners traveling throughout Iowa.

There are currently 481 EV charging stations in Iowa, including Tesla Superchargers, ChargePoint, Electrify America, and other networks. This number is growing as new stations are deployed through the NEVI federal program and private investment.
Iowa has Level 2 chargers (240V, ideal for daily charging at 12-80 miles/hour) and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) that can add 100+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes. Connector types include CCS, CHAdeMO, J1772, and Tesla NACS. Use Charge Map USA's filters to find the right charger for your vehicle.
Some Level 2 charging stations in Iowa offer free charging, particularly at shopping centers, hotels, and municipal locations. Use Charge Map USA to browse stations across 131 cities in Iowa and check individual station details for pricing information.
