Kentucky is experiencing a robust expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, largely fueled by a strategic state deployment plan and significant federal investment. Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, the state has secured nearly $70 million over five years to build out its charging network. This initiative has already led to a substantial increase, with a 104% rise in DC fast-charging ports and a 9% increase in Level 2 charging ports between 2021 and 2023, making EV charging more accessible across the commonwealth.
The expansion follows a corridor-based approach, focusing on key interstates and parkways designated as Alternative Fuel Corridors to facilitate long-distance travel. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has awarded 46 fast-charging stations across the state, with five currently operational in locations like Berea, Grayson, Hazard, Richmond, and Sparta. All 46 awarded stations, requiring at least four 150 kW DC fast-charging ports, 24/7 public access, and compatibility with most EV models, are anticipated to be fully operational by 2026. This ambitious plan aims to equip over 800 miles of Kentucky's major roadways, including I-64 and I-71, with reliable EV charging facilities to meet the growing demand from EV drivers.

There are currently 376 EV charging stations in Kentucky, including Tesla Superchargers, ChargePoint, Electrify America, and other networks. This number is growing as new stations are deployed through the NEVI federal program and private investment.
Kentucky has Level 2 chargers (240V, ideal for daily charging at 12-80 miles/hour) and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) that can add 100+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes. Connector types include CCS, CHAdeMO, J1772, and Tesla NACS. Use Charge Map USA's filters to find the right charger for your vehicle.
Some Level 2 charging stations in Kentucky offer free charging, particularly at shopping centers, hotels, and municipal locations. Use Charge Map USA to browse stations across 97 cities in Kentucky and check individual station details for pricing information.
