Louisiana is experiencing robust growth in its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, positioning itself as a leader in national expansion. Between 2023 and 2024, the state witnessed a significant 49% increase in EV charging stations, rising from 475 to 709, marking it as the second-highest state for charger growth in that period. This expansion is largely fueled by approximately $73.4 million in federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program funding, which supports a plan to deploy up to 760 new DC fast chargers. From 2021 to 2023, direct current fast-charging (DCFC) ports doubled, and Level 2 charging ports saw a 55% increase. Despite historically lagging in EV adoption, Louisiana is seeing an upward trend, with over 21,000 electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids registered by January 2026, primarily concentrated in populated areas like Jefferson and Orleans parishes.
The state's EV infrastructure development is strategically focused on key highways, primarily utilizing NEVI program funds to deploy DC Fast Chargers. Major interstates such as I-10, I-20, and I-49 are designated Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs), alongside other important routes like US-90, LA-3235, and LA-3090. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) aims to establish DC Fast Chargers a maximum of 50 miles apart and within one mile of an interstate exit or highway intersection along these corridors. The initial phase of this plan (FY23-26) targets approximately 25 sites to achieve fully built-out electric AFCs under federal standards, with future expansion plans to address non-interstate AFCs and remaining gaps to meet climate action goals of 250 charging stations per 100,000 residents by 2050.

There are currently 274 EV charging stations in Louisiana, including Tesla Superchargers, ChargePoint, Electrify America, and other networks. This number is growing as new stations are deployed through the NEVI federal program and private investment.
Louisiana has Level 2 chargers (240V, ideal for daily charging at 12-80 miles/hour) and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) that can add 100+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes. Connector types include CCS, CHAdeMO, J1772, and Tesla NACS. Use Charge Map USA's filters to find the right charger for your vehicle.
Some Level 2 charging stations in Louisiana offer free charging, particularly at shopping centers, hotels, and municipal locations. Use Charge Map USA to browse stations across 62 cities in Louisiana and check individual station details for pricing information.
