Maine is actively expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, with a significant focus on key highways to support both residents and tourism. The state's "Recharge Maine" initiative aims to create a convenient, reliable, and accessible EV charging network, particularly along heavily traveled routes such as Interstate 95, U.S. Route 2, and U.S. Route 302.
Since 2019, the availability of public EV charging stations in Maine has more than doubled. The state plans to install 52 new high-speed EV charging stations across 17 locations in the coming year, with an investment of nearly $8.6 million. These new stations are strategically placed to serve major highways and roads, as well as support outdoor recreation and university communities.
Key growth trends include the rollout of these high-speed (Level 3) EV charging stations along I-95, U.S. Route 2, and U.S. Route 302, with the goal of establishing fast charging stations every 50 miles or less along major corridors. Funding for this expansion is supported by various sources, including the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Program and the Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan. The state also received a $15 million grant to install an additional 62 Level 3 fast charging ports and 520 Level 2 charger ports at over 70 sites. These efforts are part of Maine's broader commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make EVs a viable option for long-distance travel, thereby supporting the state's critical tourism economy.

There are currently 643 EV charging stations in Maine, including Tesla Superchargers, ChargePoint, Electrify America, and other networks. This number is growing as new stations are deployed through the NEVI federal program and private investment.
Maine has Level 2 chargers (240V, ideal for daily charging at 12-80 miles/hour) and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) that can add 100+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes. Connector types include CCS, CHAdeMO, J1772, and Tesla NACS. Use Charge Map USA's filters to find the right charger for your vehicle.
Some Level 2 charging stations in Maine offer free charging, particularly at shopping centers, hotels, and municipal locations. Use Charge Map USA to browse stations across 142 cities in Maine and check individual station details for pricing information.
