Montana is experiencing significant growth in its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, largely propelled by approximately $43 million in federal funding over five years through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program. This initiative aims to establish a comprehensive charging network across the state. Evidence of this expansion includes a 61% increase in DC fast-charging ports and a 70% rise in Level 2 charging ports between 2021 and 2023. As of September 2023, Montana boasted 121 EV charging locations with 343 ports, with further continuous deployment expected. The state projects a substantial increase in EV adoption, estimating 30,000 Montana residents and 100,000 visitors using EVs on key routes by 2030.
The development strategy is phased, initially focusing on filling large charging gaps along major interstates. Interstates 15, 90, and 94 are the primary focus, with plans to add at least 10 new locations in the first year to ensure stations are no more than 100 miles apart. Subsequent phases will prioritize U.S. Highway 93 and U.S. Highway 2, particularly targeting gateway communities near national parks and tourist attractions like Glacier National Park, eventually aiming for stations spaced no more than 50 miles apart.
New EV charging stations are designed to provide 150 kilowatts to a single vehicle, utilizing universal Combined Charging Systems (CCS). A key requirement for these installations is their proximity to amenities, mandating that stations be located within one mile of facilities such as restrooms and restaurants, enhancing convenience for EV drivers.

There are currently 156 EV charging stations in Montana, including Tesla Superchargers, ChargePoint, Electrify America, and other networks. This number is growing as new stations are deployed through the NEVI federal program and private investment.
Montana has Level 2 chargers (240V, ideal for daily charging at 12-80 miles/hour) and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) that can add 100+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes. Connector types include CCS, CHAdeMO, J1772, and Tesla NACS. Use Charge Map USA's filters to find the right charger for your vehicle.
Some Level 2 charging stations in Montana offer free charging, particularly at shopping centers, hotels, and municipal locations. Use Charge Map USA to browse stations across 49 cities in Montana and check individual station details for pricing information.
