EV Charging in North Carolina

North Carolina's electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is undergoing substantial expansion, supported by $109 million in National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) funding. This strategic development initially focused on major highway corridors designated as Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs). Key highways included in this buildout are I-40, U.S. 64, I-77, I-485, U.S. 17, U.S. 70, and U.S. 74, with specific attention also given to the I-87 and U.S. 64 corridor east of Raleigh. The first phase of construction for new charging stations commenced in 2024.

The state has seen robust growth in charging port availability. Between 2021 and 2023, direct current fast-charging (DCFC) ports increased by 98%, while Level 2 charging ports grew by 42%. By early 2024, North Carolina boasted nearly 4,000 public charging ports, a significant jump from 1,400 in 2019. Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) plugs are particularly dominant, making up 59% of fast-charging plugs in the state as of 2024.

Recent guidance from the U.S. Department of Transportation has introduced more flexibility in funding allocation. This allows the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to broaden its focus beyond just major interstates, now including support for EV charging networks in local communities and rural areas. Consequently, NCDOT has adjusted its NEVI-funded station plans along alternative fuel corridors, scaling back from an initial 41 additional locations to 16, to ensure more comprehensive access across the state.
