EV Charging in New Jersey

New Jersey is rapidly expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, driven by federal funding through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program and state initiatives. The state has designated 19 interstate highways as Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs), prioritizing the installation of high-speed Direct Current Fast Chargers (DCFC). These chargers are strategically placed no more than 50 miles apart and within one mile of a highway exit, capable of recharging an EV battery to 80% in approximately 20 to 30 minutes.

A significant development is the $20.96 million contract awarded in December 2024 for 19 new charging stations on NJDOT-maintained Interstate Highways, expected by summer 2027. These stations will provide 76 publicly accessible 150kW DCFC ports with both CCS and J3400 (Tesla) connectors. Key highways included are I-76/I-676, I-78, I-80, I-95, I-195, I-278, I-280, I-287, and I-295.

Beyond these projects, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority is developing DCFC stations at 20 service areas by the end of 2025, with plans for an additional 160 EV charging ports by 2033. The growth trend is strong, with DCFC ports increasing by 82% from 2021 to 2023, positioning New Jersey among the top five states for EV infrastructure maturity in 2025.
