New Mexico is actively expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, with a strong focus on its major interstate highways: I-10, I-25, and I-40. This growth is largely fueled by federal mandates and significant funding, particularly from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. The state's plan aims to establish a reliable network of DC fast-charging stations every 50 miles or less along these key corridors, ensuring they are easily accessible from exits and meet high technical standards for multiple concurrent charging and uptime.
As of November 2024, New Mexico has 326 public EV charging stations with 793 ports. The state has experienced a notable surge in charging options, with DC fast-charging ports increasing by 90% and Level 2 ports by 42% between 2021 and 2023. This expansion is supported by $38 million from the NEVI program and additional American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. Currently, twenty NEVI-funded charging locations are under construction, with some expected to be operational by December 2026. Key highways seeing development include I-25 (Raton, Truth or Consequences, Socorro), I-40 (Grants, Moriarty, Tucumcari), and I-10 (Deming, Lordsburg), with the first NEVI-funded fast-charging station on I-10 in Akela Flats opening in early 2025.
While urban areas such as Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Las Cruces currently hold the largest share of charging infrastructure, the NEVI program prioritizes the interstate highway network, with future expansion planned for state and local roads. ARPA funding is also dedicated to improving rural connectivity. This ongoing development is crucial as New Mexico witnesses a positive trend in EV adoption, with registrations for new vehicles rising from 0.2% in 2016 to 5.2% by early 2024, aligning with the state's ambitious targets for zero-emission vehicle sales in the coming years.

There are currently 444 EV charging stations in New Mexico, including Tesla Superchargers, ChargePoint, Electrify America, and other networks. This number is growing as new stations are deployed through the NEVI federal program and private investment.
New Mexico has Level 2 chargers (240V, ideal for daily charging at 12-80 miles/hour) and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) that can add 100+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes. Connector types include CCS, CHAdeMO, J1772, and Tesla NACS. Use Charge Map USA's filters to find the right charger for your vehicle.
Some Level 2 charging stations in New Mexico offer free charging, particularly at shopping centers, hotels, and municipal locations. Use Charge Map USA to browse stations across 76 cities in New Mexico and check individual station details for pricing information.
