EV Charging in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is experiencing substantial growth in its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, driven by both federal and state initiatives. The state has emerged as a leader in deploying federally funded EV charging stations through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, with 29 operational NEVI-funded stations representing a $17 million investment and an additional 54 stations in various stages of planning or construction. This rapid expansion has led to over 80,000 charging sessions recorded since the first NEVI site opened in December 2023.

The development of charging infrastructure in Pennsylvania is unfolding in phases. Initially, efforts concentrated on establishing charging stations along core interstate highways. Having achieved "Full Build-Out Certification" in September 2025, the state is now progressing to subsequent phases, including "Corridor Connections" to expand charging along major roadways beyond existing Alternative Fuel Corridors, and "Community Charging" with a planned $100 million in federal funds targeting public EV infrastructure across various regions.

Key highways and corridors, such as the Pennsylvania Turnpike, are central to this expansion. The Turnpike has significantly increased its EV charging capabilities over the past decade, with more than 60 charging stations at eight service plazas. Future plans, in partnership with Applegreen Electric, aim to install 80 new universal EV stations to ensure all 17 service plazas offer charging by the end of 2027. Overall, Pennsylvania saw an 88% to 90% increase in public EV charging stations in both rural and urban areas between 2022 and 2024, with its EV Mobility Plan recommending at least 5,000 new charging ports at 2,000 sites by 2028 to support growing EV adoption and alleviate range anxiety.
