100 WESTMINSTER STATION #1
110 Westminster St Parking Lot
Rhode Island has significantly expanded its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, showing strong growth trends in recent years. As of February 2026, the state offers 365 EV charging stations with over 1,000 ports across 39 cities. This expansion is bolstered by federal funding, including an estimated $22.9 million from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program, with an additional $15 million in federal funds slated for over 200 new charging stations at 85 sites.
A major focus of this development has been along key highways, particularly Interstate 95. Rhode Island was the first state to complete Phase 1 of the federal EV charging corridor program, installing four new Level 3 DCFCs along I-95 by December 2023. Currently, the I-95 Alternative Fuel Corridor has eight DCFCs and six Dual-Port Level 2 charging stations, ensuring charging availability every 50 miles. This accomplishment allows the state to allocate remaining NEVI funds to further expand charging in communities and along other corridors. Other important highways in Rhode Island include I-195, I-295, US Route 1, and various state routes, which are expected to see further infrastructure development in Phase 2 of the NEVI program starting in Fall 2024.
