South Carolina is experiencing substantial growth in its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, driven by increasing EV adoption and significant federal funding. The state saw a 19% increase in charging stations from late 2021 to mid-2022, with EV registrations surging from 2,790 in 2017 to over 20,000 by 2022. This expansion is particularly notable in fast chargers, with direct current fast-charging (DCFC) ports increasing by 171% and Level 2 ports by 34% between 2021 and 2023. The state is also becoming an EV industry hub, attracting over $11 billion in clean energy investments and creating more than 13,500 jobs in battery recycling, EV manufacturing, and battery production.
Much of this development is concentrated along key highways and metropolitan areas, with a focus on strategic placement. South Carolina has received approximately $70 million from the National EV Infrastructure (NEVI) Program, aimed at establishing public charging stations every 50 miles along designated interstates. The NEVI program specifically targets I-26, I-20, I-77, I-85, and I-95 for fast-charging station deployment. While I-85 and I-77 currently have adequate infrastructure, I-26 has sufficient stations mainly near Spartanburg and Columbia, and I-95 still has gaps in meeting the 50-mile standard. The state Department of Transportation plans to address these gaps, particularly in the Midlands, Lowcountry, Charleston, and Myrtle Beach areas, with more chargers expected by 2025.

There are currently 642 EV charging stations in South Carolina, including Tesla Superchargers, ChargePoint, Electrify America, and other networks. This number is growing as new stations are deployed through the NEVI federal program and private investment.
South Carolina has Level 2 chargers (240V, ideal for daily charging at 12-80 miles/hour) and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) that can add 100+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes. Connector types include CCS, CHAdeMO, J1772, and Tesla NACS. Use Charge Map USA's filters to find the right charger for your vehicle.
Some Level 2 charging stations in South Carolina offer free charging, particularly at shopping centers, hotels, and municipal locations. Use Charge Map USA to browse stations across 122 cities in South Carolina and check individual station details for pricing information.
