Between 2021 and 2023, the state saw a substantial increase of 63% in direct current fast-charging (DCFC) ports and a 40% rise in Level 2 charging ports. This expansion aligns with a 46% increase in EV sales from model year 2022 to 2023. As of October 2025, South Dakota boasts over 100 public EV charging stations, including 75 Level 2 and 45 DC fast charging stations, supplemented by 10 Tesla Supercharger stations with 68 ports. Further development is anticipated with an estimated $29.5 million allocation through the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program, part of the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, aimed at establishing a comprehensive nationwide charging network.

The state's EV Fast Charging Plan strategically prioritizes the installation of charging infrastructure along its primary Interstate corridors: I-90, I-29, I-229, and I-190. NEVI Program guidelines stipulate that fast charging stations must be located within 50 miles of each other and within one travel mile of the interstate to ensure convenient access for EV drivers on long journeys. Companies like Red E Charge have contributed to this effort by establishing non-Tesla EV charging stations along the I-90 corridor. Beyond the interstates, major urban centers such as Rapid City, with over 120 charging stations, and Sioux Falls, featuring 95 EVgo charging stations, are also focal points for charging availability, alongside other cities like Yankton and Spearfish.
