Virginia is experiencing substantial growth in its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, driven by significant federal funding, particularly from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, and proactive state initiatives. Projections indicate a substantial increase in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) by 2030, necessitating a significant expansion of direct current fast charging (DCFC) ports across the state. This growth reflects a concerted effort to support the increasing adoption of EVs and ensure a robust charging network.
A primary focus of this development is on key interstate highways, designated as Alternative Fuel Corridors (AFCs). The Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) deployment plan prioritizes achieving "Fully Built Out" status along these corridors. Initial NEVI funding is targeting new station construction and upgrades along major routes such as I-64, I-77, I-81, I-85, I-95, and I-295, with I-66 and I-495 already meeting full build-out criteria. Recent funding allocations are further bolstering these efforts, adding numerous fast-charging stations with multiple ports along both interstates and critical state highways like US-17, US-23, US-29, and US-460, aiming to fill existing charging gaps and facilitate long-distance EV travel.

There are currently 1,000 EV charging stations in Virginia, including Tesla Superchargers, ChargePoint, Electrify America, and other networks. This number is growing as new stations are deployed through the NEVI federal program and private investment.
Virginia has Level 2 chargers (240V, ideal for daily charging at 12-80 miles/hour) and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) that can add 100+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes. Connector types include CCS, CHAdeMO, J1772, and Tesla NACS. Use Charge Map USA's filters to find the right charger for your vehicle.
Some Level 2 charging stations in Virginia offer free charging, particularly at shopping centers, hotels, and municipal locations. Use Charge Map USA to browse stations across 194 cities in Virginia and check individual station details for pricing information.
