Vermont is rapidly expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, driven by state initiatives and substantial federal and state funding. The state aims to ensure at least one public DC fast charger port within a mile of all interstate and highway exits, and within 25 miles of other DC fast chargers along state highways. This proactive approach has positioned Vermont as a national leader, boasting the highest amount of EV charging stations per capita.
The growth in charging options has been significant. As of January 2025, Vermont had 459 public EV chargers, including 92 Level 3 DC Fast Chargers, and had doubled its EV fleet in two years. Between 2021 and 2023, DC fast-charging ports increased by 56%, while Level 2 charging ports grew by 17%. Key highways targeted for this expansion include Interstates 89 and 91, along with U.S. Route 7 and Vermont Route 9.
Funding for these projects primarily comes from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program, which allocated an estimated $21.2 million to Vermont for highway charging infrastructure. Additionally, the Vermont EVSE Grant Program and Vermont Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) Grants contribute to the expansion of charging stations throughout communities. Significant progress includes the opening of Vermont's first NEVI charging station in Bradford in Spring 2024, and contracts awarded for 11 new fast-charging sites at priority locations along major routes, including Randolph, Wilmington, Rutland, and White River Junction.

There are currently 530 EV charging stations in Vermont, including Tesla Superchargers, ChargePoint, Electrify America, and other networks. This number is growing as new stations are deployed through the NEVI federal program and private investment.
Vermont has Level 2 chargers (240V, ideal for daily charging at 12-80 miles/hour) and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) that can add 100+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes. Connector types include CCS, CHAdeMO, J1772, and Tesla NACS. Use Charge Map USA's filters to find the right charger for your vehicle.
Some Level 2 charging stations in Vermont offer free charging, particularly at shopping centers, hotels, and municipal locations. Use Charge Map USA to browse stations across 123 cities in Vermont and check individual station details for pricing information.
