Washington State is making significant strides in expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, driven by substantial federal and state investments. The number of public EV charging ports in the state has more than doubled in the last four years, increasing from approximately 3,500 in 2021 to over 7,000 in 2025. Direct current fast-charging (DCFC) ports alone saw a 56% increase between 2021 and 2023, highlighting a strong focus on rapid charging capabilities.
This growth is strategically concentrated along key highway corridors to facilitate long-distance electric travel and eliminate "charging deserts." Notably, 96 new fast charging ports are planned across 14 locations along Interstate 90 and US Routes 97, 195, and 395, backed by roughly $12 million from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. The state's broader plan aims for charging stations every 50 miles or less across its entire highway system, including Washington State Ferries routes.
Existing infrastructure, such as the West Coast Electric Highway, already provides fast-charging stations along Interstate 5, parts of Interstate 90, and Highway 2, typically spaced every 25-60 miles. Major urban areas like Seattle and Spokane, as well as hubs like Ellensburg, Aberdeen, and Yakima, offer numerous charging options, making EV road trips along these routes increasingly feasible. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and Department of Commerce also provide an interactive EV Mapping and Planning Tool (EV-MAP) to aid in future infrastructure development.

There are currently 1,000 EV charging stations in Washington, including Tesla Superchargers, ChargePoint, Electrify America, and other networks. This number is growing as new stations are deployed through the NEVI federal program and private investment.
Washington has Level 2 chargers (240V, ideal for daily charging at 12-80 miles/hour) and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) that can add 100+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes. Connector types include CCS, CHAdeMO, J1772, and Tesla NACS. Use Charge Map USA's filters to find the right charger for your vehicle.
Some Level 2 charging stations in Washington offer free charging, particularly at shopping centers, hotels, and municipal locations. Use Charge Map USA to browse stations across 222 cities in Washington and check individual station details for pricing information.
