Wisconsin is making significant strides in expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, largely supported by the state's Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (WEVI) Program and the federal National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program. The state is allocated approximately $78 million in NEVI funds over five years, beginning in federal fiscal year 2023, to bolster its charging network. Through initial funding rounds, Wisconsin has already committed over $36.4 million in federal support for 78 fast-charging projects, demonstrating a strong push towards a comprehensive EV ecosystem.
Key highways designated as Alternative Fuel Corridors for prioritized EV charging station deployment include Interstates I-90, I-94, I-43, I-41, I-39, and I-535, as well as U.S. Highways US 53, US 151, and parts of US 51, among others. Growth trends show a substantial increase in charging options; from 2021 to 2023, direct current fast-charging (DCFC) ports surged by 130%, and Level 2 charging ports grew by 42%. The overarching goal is to achieve 100% NEVI Program compliance across all designated corridors, ensuring charging stations are available every 50 miles and less than one mile off an exit.
Each NEVI-funded station is mandated to offer at least four CCS-standard charging ports, each capable of 150kW continuous and simultaneous charging, with a total station capacity of 600 kW. The WEVI program emphasizes equitable distribution of these stations statewide, with awards made across various regions. The first federally funded EV charging stations in Wisconsin became operational in early 2025, marking a tangible step toward a robust and accessible charging network for electric vehicle owners.

There are currently 839 EV charging stations in Wisconsin, including Tesla Superchargers, ChargePoint, Electrify America, and other networks. This number is growing as new stations are deployed through the NEVI federal program and private investment.
Wisconsin has Level 2 chargers (240V, ideal for daily charging at 12-80 miles/hour) and DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) that can add 100+ miles of range in 20-30 minutes. Connector types include CCS, CHAdeMO, J1772, and Tesla NACS. Use Charge Map USA's filters to find the right charger for your vehicle.
Some Level 2 charging stations in Wisconsin offer free charging, particularly at shopping centers, hotels, and municipal locations. Use Charge Map USA to browse stations across 206 cities in Wisconsin and check individual station details for pricing information.
